The Backroad Box turns the most underused space in your vehicle (the back seat) into secure, organized gear storage. Locking drawers pull out through your rear doors, and the optional Upper Drawer opens forward between the front seats, so you can grab what you need without leaving the cab.

No drilling, no seat removal, no permanent anything: it straps in, and it straps back out. Three sizes fit everything from full-size pickups to compact crossovers. Designed with Tim Johnson of Truck House Life and handmade in Port Townsend, Washington. Ships fully assembled! Orders ship within 3-4 weeks from the date of purchase.

Your Back Seat, Promoted

Think about how your back seat actually gets used on a trip: a duffel avalanche, a cooler wedged behind the driver, the headlamp you know is in there somewhere. All that square footage, doing almost nothing. The Backroad Box gives that space a job. Two deep, locking drawers ride on the seat and pull out through your rear doors. Can't pull the drawers all the way out? A lifting lid pulls out offering pull access only when the drawer is open! Gear stays put on washboard roads, out of sight at trailheads, and is fully locked and secure when you're away. And unlike seat-delete storage systems, the Backroad Box doesn't ask you to sacrifice anything. Your seat stays in, and your interior remains unmodified. When you need the space back for passengers, the whole unit unstraps and lifts out in minutes.

Sized for Your Rig

Three sizes, one price per configuration. Pick yours by what's parked in the driveway:

Full-Size — 55" wide as a pair. Built for full-size trucks and SUVs: F-150 and Super Duty, Ram, Silverado and Sierra, Tundra, Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, and friends.

Midsize — 48" wide as a pair. The sweet spot for midsize and compact trucks: Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, Frontier, Gladiator, Maverick, plus 4Runners, Broncos, Outbacks, and similar rigs.

Compact — 42" wide as a pair. Sized for compact crossovers and cars: RAV4, CR-V, Crosstrek, Forester, and most sedans & hatchbacks with a usable back seat.

Singles are half the width of their pair and fit nearly anything. Not sure which size is yours? Run the fit check below — it takes one minute and a tape measure.

Check Your Fit in 60 Seconds

Open a rear door and measure straight across your back seat, door panel to door panel, at cushion height. Then measure again about 18 inches higher, where door armrests stick out. Your smaller number is the one that matters.

  • 57" or more → Full-Size fits
  • 50" or more → Midsize fits
  • 44" or more → Compact fits

Adding the Upper Drawer? Check that there's open space between (or above) your center console for the drawer to extend toward the cab. Questions about your specific vehicle? We're a phone call away at: 360-544-9684

Three Drawers, Three Ways In

Build it the way you pack. The Backroad Box offers three distinct configurations to meet your storage needs.

  • Single Box

One locking drawer, accessed through a rear door. Ideal for lighter packers, smaller rigs, or anyone saving seat room for a dog or a duffel. Start here and expand whenever you're ready, every Backroad Box connects to every other one, so a Single becomes a Double the day your gear outgrows it.

  • Double Box

A drawer out each rear door, spanning the full seat. Recovery gear and tools ride on the driver's side; the camp kitchen rides on the passenger side. It's the setup that makes your rug feel like it has a garage in the second row. Organized, lockable, and ready to use whenever a rear door swings open.

  • Full System

The complete system. The Upper Drawer rides on top and opens forward, between the front seats for snacks, maps, binoculars, all the small stuff you want while driving, without pulling over or climbing back. Double Box only: the Upper Drawer needs the centered position to line up between your seats.

Built in Port Townsend. Proven with Truck House Life.

Camp N Car began with six months of living out of a camper in Alaska, so when it came time to build a back seat drawer system, we built it with someone who never stopped living that way. Tim Johnson of Truck House Life travels year-round from a hand-built cabin on the back of his Ford, and the Backroad Box earned its place in his rig before it earned a place on this page: loaded heavy, ridden hard, and refined by what the miles taught us.

Every box is CNC-cut and finished in our Port Townsend, Washington shop from sturdy black heska-ply, which is wrapped in a tough, textured, wipe-clean laminate that shrugs off muddy boots and dropped carabiners, with a keyed lock on every drawer and a flat top that moonlights as a camp counter. It's the same standard behind every piece of furniture we've ever shipped: built world class by people who camp out of their cars, proven by a guy who lives out of his truck.
