Building a Van for the Community: Camp N Car and the Port Angeles Food Bank

For years, the Port Angeles Food Bank has been doing something remarkable, driving fresh, nutritious food to families across the Olympic Peninsula, including communities that are hours from the nearest grocery store. What they were doing wasn't the problem. How they were doing it was.

Before this project, keeping perishable food cold on the road meant coolers, ice, and a time-consuming load and unload process at every stop. It worked, but it cost the team valuable time and limited how much fresh food they could reliably transport on a single run. When you're trying to serve families spread across one of the most geographically isolated regions in Washington State, every hour and every degree matters.

That's the problem they brought to us.

Building Around a Mission

When we sat down with the Port Angeles Food Bank team to talk through what they actually needed, it became clear pretty quickly that this wasn't going to be a typical van build. This wasn't about making something comfortable or stylish, it was about making something that worked without fail, every single day, in service of people who were counting on it.

The centerpiece of the conversion is a 15kWh EcoFlow power system paired with 400 watts of solar on the roof and a shore power adapter for overnight charging at the facility. The system runs four full-size chest fridge/freezers simultaneously, without a generator. No fuel costs. No noise. No worrying about power in the middle of a route.

We paired that electrical system with custom flip-down overhead shelving designed to make loading and unloading dry goods faster, and three heavy-duty pull-out storage trays at the rear of the van for easy access at distribution sites. An awning setup means the Food Bank team can set up a shaded distribution area directly off the van in minutes.

Every decision came back to the same question: will this make the team's job easier and more reliable? If the answer wasn't a clear yes, we reconsidered it.

Out on the Routes

The van started running routes almost immediately after delivery, and the difference has been tangible. Distribution stops that previously required careful coordination around ice replenishment now run smoothly from load to last drop. The team can carry more fresh and frozen food per trip, reach stops farther from Port Angeles, and spend less time managing logistics and more time with the people they serve.

Watching the van in action at a distribution site with the awning deployed, rear doors open, staff moving crates efficiently while community members lined up with their bags, made the whole project feel real in a way that a finished build photo never quite captures.

Why This Project Mattered to Us

Camp N Car builds conversions for adventurers, travelers, and people who want to live and work differently. That's the core of what we do. But the skills and systems that make a great off-grid camper van  (reliable power, smart storage, durable construction built for daily use) translate directly to applications like this one.

This project reminded us that the craft we've developed has value beyond the recreational space. Vans are tools, and tools can be pointed at problems worth solving.

We're proud of this build. We're proud of the Port Angeles Food Bank and the work they do every day for families across the Peninsula. And we're grateful they trusted us to be part of it.
