Why You’ll Love the Trunk Bunk
Do you want to sleep comfortably in your car without making any permanent alterations? If so, meet the Trunk Bunk!
The Trunk Bunk is our most popular product here at Camp N Car. It’s a bed frame that can sleep one person or expand to fit two! It’s perfect for romantic weekend getaways, rejuvenating road trips, or any kind of adventure you’re taking with a vehicle!
Bed frames are important for car camping because they add to the square footage of your car by providing layers. For example, you can sleep on top of your Trunk Bunk while storing things underneath. How’s that for optimization?!
Road trips, car camping, and outdoor adventures are all more fun when your gear is organized, and with the Trunk Bunk, you’ll have a clean living space to return to after a day of climbing rocks or sliding down sand dunes.
We can’t talk about this bed frame without mentioning quality, so you should know the Trunk Bunk was invented by car campers and vanlife enthusiasts like you. It is also made in the USA using sustainable business practices!
One of the best things about this car camping bed frame is that it’s easy to assemble. In fact, all you’ll need is an electric screwdriver and a couple of hours to pop the Trunk Bunk together. Instructions are provided, and our team is only a phone call away if you have questions.

Trunk Bunk Decision Guide
Unsure if the Trunk Bunk is right for your vehicle? Need some help figuring out sizing, dimensions or other fitting considerations? We’re here to help!
Dimensions
Our Trunk Bunks come in 5′, 5.5′, and 6′ lengths. These are approximate measurements, each model is a little shy of these actual lengths. At its most contracted, the Trunk Bunk is 25” wide, and at its maximum expansion, it measures 42”. So if your vehicle is relatively flat and long enough to support the bed size you want with 24 inches of width the Trunk Bunk will work for you!
Storage
The Trunk Bunk separates into two lengthwise sections for easy storage when not in use, giving you more flexibility in how and where you stow it. Its sturdy construction and impressive weight capacity also make it perfect for storing gear on top while you’re driving, keeping everything secure and organized during your adventures. There are countless ways that having a Trunk Bunk can help you!
Clearance
Unlike a mattress on the ground, elevating your sleeping platform unlocks extra storage and square footage in your vehicle! The Trunk Bunk comes in two heights to suit your needs: the regular version at 9.5″ and the tall version at 17″. In vehicles like minivans, the regular height can double as a bench, while the tall option sacrifices that feature for even more storage space below.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main benefits of using the Trunk Bunk for travel?
Being able to sleep comfortably in your vehicle opens up all kinds of travel flexibility and cost saving options, that’s what the Trunk Bunk is all about. Having a firm and comfortable surface to sleep on in your car makes it much more appealing than sleeping in your seats and we believe that once you get a taste of the travel flexibility the Trunk Bunk offers that you’ll never go back to spending money on hotels or Airbnb’s again.
With the Trunk Bunk anywhere you can park for the night becomes your new home all without ever having to leave your vehicle or pitch a tent! Once you get out there and discover this style of travel and camping for yourself we’re confident you’ll understand!
How much does the Trunk Bunk weigh?
Considering how sturdy and well engineered a product the Trunk Bunk is, it’s surprisingly light! Depending on your length and height, both sections of the Trunk Bunk combine for a total of 36 – 48 pounds. Don’t forget that the Trunk Bunk comes apart into two sections so you’ll only have to negotiate half that much weight at once!
(all weights are approximate and may vary slightly)
What is the weight capacity of the Trunk Bunk?
Is the Trunk Bunk easily removed and reinstalled?
Can you assemble the Trunk Bunk for me?
Due to the extremely high price and logistical difficulties of shipping a fully assembled Trunk Bunk this is not a service we can offer at this time.
Have you ever lived or traveled extensively out of a vehicle?
Why does the Trunk Bunk cost this much?
The reality of doing all of this means we can’t offer goods that are as cheap as stuff you can buy from overseas manufactures, but we are determined to continue being a company that manufactures solely in the United States and supports our local economy. Once you make your purchase you will see the quality and customer care make it all worthwhile!
Is the Trunk Bunk easy to assemble on my own? What do I need?
Can you ship out of the United States? How about Alaska or Hawaii?
Yes we do, but you will need to contact us to make a special shipping arrangement. We offer free shipping to all customers in the contiguous United States but for anyone outside the US or in Alaska/Hawaii we will need to generate a custom shipping quote and charge accordingly.
Final Considerations
The Trunk Bunk is for you if you want a comfortable camping experience (for one or two people!) without permanently altering your vehicle.
Our Trunk Bunk expandable bed frame is big enough to fit twin mattresses, camping pads, and other small foam sleeping cushions. It’s not big enough for “full” or “double” sized mattresses, although we’ve been known to cut mattresses to fit. It also comes in 5′, 5.5′, and 6′ lengths, but taller people sometimes use a well-placed cooler or storage tote to add inches.
In short, if you want to seriously upgrade your camping experience without the hassle and expense of a custom conversion, the Trunk Bunk is your best friend. Don’t wait because the weather won’t!

I have insuled it on my VW Passat variant. There are a few issues with head clearance, but it is perfect for a micro camper. Next year I will plan a trip with my dog.
Greta G –
Clear instructions and fun to assemble. Works well in our micro camper van!
Arla –
Great sturdy trunk bed. I was able to put it together myself without any additional assistance. Whenever I emailed the seller (Steven) I received a prompt and professional response. I have received compliments on my van build which includes this trunk bed and one other product from this company.
Nicole Pitchford –
This worked perfectly for our van. We already took our first camping trip!
Linda Burkard –
Great bed, fits perfect in my 2013 ford transit connect. I love how it’s a couch by day and pulls out to my bed at night. Well buil
Mason White –
I have been using a Trunk Bunk and Van Shelf in my Honda Pilot for several years when I head out to trailheads and parks. I get a comfortable place to sleep and still have plenty of floor space for trail tools, backpacking gear and photography equipment.
When my Pilot reaches the end of it’s road, I’ll reach out for a van project.
Tracee Tucker –
Easy to put together and nicely made. Instructions were very easy to follow which is a huge bonus!

With the Trunk Bunk we found the perfect solution for our sleeping, seating & gear storage in our 2021 Toyota Sienna van. The 6′ version fits perfectly in the Sienna with the middle seats moved forward and the rear seats stored in the floor. We found Camp n Car totally responsive to our needs during all phases of our project: research, purchase, installation, and after the sale. We received an email from Steve 7 days after the sale asking us how our bunk was working out. If you purchase this accessory for your camper van project you won’t be disappointed with the quality of the product or the customer service provided by Camp n Car.

Perfect size for my 2013 ford transit, I bought the tall one so I could have lots of space underneath for storage. Works great, looks nice.

I added the Trunk Bunk to my Promaster City build. It was easy to assemble using a power drill; would not want to try it with a screwdriver, though. The 70″ length fits with a few inches to spare. It is well designed and strong. The adjustable feature gives me options for the rest of my build, which is good because my design seems to change daily. I built a drawer to fit under the rearward section to hold the kitchen gear when the rear doors are open, and under the forward section I use standard Sterlite bins from Walmart. Plus, dealing with Steve by phone and email was painless because he so very responsive. And for me, delivery time was about a week.
A quality company producing quality products.

Jiji Lee –
Enjoying the Trunk Bunk, it fits my needs for camping in my minivan very well!
Juanita Simpson –
Great to work with !! Prompt replies !! Excellent product !! The Tall Trunk Bunk works so well for me and I’m happy to have found it !!
Sonya –
I bought the trunk bunk because I wanted enough clearance to go over the wheel well, and be able to fit my storage bins underneath.
Another reviewer said this fit their Transit Connect perfectly, so I jumped in.
I had a harder time assembling it than others [apparently], but Martin walked me through the tough parts by phone – excellent customer service! Now, I’m considering a shelf unit.
The only reason my review isn’t 5 stars is it arrived over a week later than expected….

I ordered the 6 Ft. Tall Trunk Bunk for my micro camper I am building out in a Ford Transit Connect. It fits perfectly over the wheel well and in the cargo space. This was fun to put together and saved me from measuring and cutting the wood all by hand. This is so much easier and looks better than if I had tried to cut the slats by hand! Steve called me to answer questions about the drawers that can be bought to fit the under bed area, and he kept me updated me on the ship date, great customer service! I would definitely come back to Camp n Car for any other builds I would like in the future. The fact that it is in two separate parts is genius! I like that this bed is able to be moved to whatever camping vehicle I am using, or even to a tent, and is easy to remove, if I need to carry any cargo in my van!

What a game changer! This 65 year old body wasn’t appreciating sleeping on cushions in my micro van any more. It was a big splurge to think about spending that chunk of change on a bed frame, but I’m SO glad I did! Brian was awesome and helped me make a decision to get the six foot tall bunk. Assembly took a bit of time, but it fits perfectly in the back of my 2011 Transit Connect. Wow! So easy to get in and out of bed and now I have room to store things. I can move the components in and out of the van by myself. I use my van alot for transporting things for my business. The two components stack easily on each other and for a “shelf unit” for times I am moving products. I love how I can easily collapse the bed or expand it. It’s brilliant and well made and is super strong. Thank you!

I have a Vandoit with a slide out gear tray. The five foot length fits in my van perfectly to add storage but still allow for another sleeping area in the van. The product arrived promptly and the directions were perfect. It took me exactly two hours to build. Quality is fantastic and it is a really unique design.

Great overall experience. Steve was prompt and very helpful in answering all my questions when trying to figure out the best fit for my vehicle. Assembly was very simple and I enjoyed the process. The trunk bunk is sturdy, great design and works great for my set up.
David Jorgensen –
Easy assembly, works perfectly in my 2009 Element. I’m 5’8” and the 5.5 foot trunk bunk fits me and I sleep comfortably. The seats in the ‘09 don’t fold all the way forward, so the 6ft. Wouldn’t fit. Lots of room underneath for containers. The whole unit slides in and out of the car easily. Great for long road trips!
Jose Rios –
Just finished putting the bed together, very easy, one electric screwdriver was all I used. Great product. Not cheap, but worth the price if you want a quality product! Especially for those of us who ain’t got any carpentry skills…LOL
Brian –
The beauty of this system is that it is versatile (and it is of quality construction). Most systems are permanent to some degree, but this one has flexibility to be used in some different ways and easily moved. You can make your own platform for cheaper (assuming you have all the tools, time) but it won’t have the craftmanship and it probably won’t be as light and practical as The Trunk Bunk.
Tammy Kincaid –
I LOVE my trunk bunk!! It was exactly what I was looking for with my no build minivan camper. I’m in my upper 50’s and easily able to put together and move in and out of the vehicle. I use outdoor chair box cushions as a “mattress” and they fit perfectly. Communication was top notch. Love supporting an ethical business as well.
Amy Heibel –
Extremely awesome. I am not AT ALL handy and I put this together myself in two hours. As promised, it was fun! But most important: it fits perfectly in the rear of my Honda Element and creates a very comfortable bed out of the awkward uneven floor situation.
Alex Lamb –
The trunk bunk is an awesome product. Easy to assemble. Took about an hour start to finish from box to bunk. It’s a smart design that is versatile, simple, and perfect for adventure.
Jennifer Owen –
I absolutely love my Trunk Bunk setup and how easy it is to use for a No Build – van build option. I hate having clutter all around me so I needed something to give me some lift and allow me to have storage space under my bed. I have plenty of space to put all of my camping gear and clothing needs under my bed and give me ample floor space to move around.
I also love that while I will be doing most of my adventures solo – the Trunk Bunk will allow me to slide it out to make room for a second camper when I want to take one of my children or a friend with me.
Solid, sturdy and beautifully made. I am very thankful that I chose to invest in a good solid bed frame for my van life adventures. The cot I was using previously was very uncomfortable and if you want to be able to actually enjoy your van experience – you need to make sure you are getting good sleep.
I can’t wait to take my van all over the Pacific Northwest this summer and beyond! Thank you guys! It is PERFECT!
Megan Wildwood –
Assembling the Trunk Bunk was the most fun I’ve had in ages & the best part is that the mattress I bought for my previous platform fit the 6 foot frame perfectly. I seriously can’t recommend this enough. I’ve designed and built three platforms now and not having to measure and cut my wood has saved me a lot of trouble. Now I have way more time for adventuring in my Honda Element!
Maryann Tapiro –
I love the new bed frame Camp N Car made for my van! It’s a really great design, made with beautiful wood, and strong enough to hold me and my two dogs. I love that I can make it a single or double and it fits right between the wheel wells inside the back of the van.
It’s perfect for a necessary cross country road trip during a pandemic. Great guys with a great product! I highly recommend it.
