Our Favorite Three-Day Car Camping Itinerary in Leavenworth, Icicle Creek, and the Enchantments

Leavenworth, Washington, is one of the Pacific Northwest's most beloved outdoor destinations. Tucked against the eastern slope of the Cascades, this Bavarian-inspired town is the gateway to endless alpine adventures. With rivers, craggy peaks, and legendary trails all within reach, it's an ideal place for a three-day car camping trip. Whether you're looking to relax along Icicle Creek, push your limits in the Enchantments, or soak up the mountain atmosphere, this itinerary highlights the best of the area.

Day 1: Arrive in Leavenworth & Explore Icicle Creek

Leavenworth, Washington

Camp: Set up camp at either Eightmile Campground or Johnny Creek Campground, located along Icicle Road. Both sites offer shaded campsites, easy creek access, and proximity to trailheads. They're first-come, first-served during peak summer weekends, so aim to arrive before noon.

Morning Activity:

Roll into Leavenworth mid-morning and stock up on essentials. The town has plenty of markets, bakeries, and gear shops if you need last-minute supplies.

Midday Activity:

Spend the afternoon exploring Icicle Creek. The Icicle Gorge Trail is a mellow 4-mile loop perfect for stretching your legs after the drive. The trail winds through lush forest with constant river views and several sandy spots for a dip if the weather is warm. Grab a post-hike bratwurst at Muchen Haus in town to refuel after your day of adventure.

Afternoon Activity:

For those itching for more adventure, nearby climbing routes and bouldering areas line Icicle Canyon. Even if you're not climbing, the granite walls and canyon views are worth pulling over to take in.

Evening:

Return to camp, settle in, and enjoy the mountain scenery. Evening light in the valley is spectacular, with alpenglow painting the Stuart Range.

Dinner: Cook a camp meal riverside, or if you want to venture back into town, try Icicle Brewing Company for craft beer and hearty pub food.

Day 2: Hiking the Enchantments or Colchuck Lake

Colchuck Lake

Camp: Stay put at your campsite along Icicle Road, or if you prefer, book a spot at Leavenworth's KOA for more amenities like showers and a swimming pool.

Morning Activity:

Rise early for the main event: hiking into the Enchantments. If you've won the lottery for overnight permits, you're in for a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trip. But even without a permit, you can hit the day-hike to Colchuck Lake, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Washington.

  • Colchuck Lake Hike: This 8-mile round-trip hike gains about 2,200 feet and rewards you with turquoise waters framed by Dragontail and Colchuck Peaks. It's a strenuous but doable hike for fit car campers.
  • Alternative: If you're looking for something less strenuous than Colchuck, the Icicle Gorge Trail is a much better option. This 4-mile loop is relatively flat and follows Icicle Creek through lush forest with constant river views.

Midday Activity:

Pack a lunch to enjoy at the lake. The granite slabs along Colchuck's shoreline make for the perfect picnic spot. Just remember to follow Leave No Trace and pack out everything.

Afternoon Activity:

On your way back down, take your time and soak in the forest. If you've still got some energy, stop at the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery near the base of Icicle Road for a quick walk and a glimpse of salmon runs in season.

Evening:

Return to camp with tired legs and a smile. Reward yourself with a hearty dinner—grilled brats, foil packet veggies, or a quick stir-fry on your camp stove.

Dinner: If you'd rather skip cooking, head into Leavenworth for dinner at South, a Latin-inspired spot with tacos, margaritas, and lively outdoor seating.

Day 3: Alpine Lakes, Bavarian Charm & River Relaxation

Camp: You'll likely pack up camp in the morning, but keep a day-use cooler handy for a final picnic.

Morning Activity:

For a mellow final day, opt for a shorter hike like the Icicle Ridge Trail (just 1–2 miles up gives you stunning views of the valley). Another option is Tumwater Canyon, where the Wenatchee River carves through granite walls—great for a morning stroll or photography stop.

Midday Activity:

Head back into town for a slower pace. Wander through Leavenworth's Bavarian-style shops and grab a pretzel or coffee on Front Street. If you're visiting in summer, the town's Waterfront Park is perfect for swimming or tubing in the Wenatchee River.

Afternoon Activity:

Before leaving, stop by a local winery or cider house—Leavenworth is known for both. Icicle Ridge Winery offers tastings with mountain views, while Bushel & Bee Cider serves up refreshing local pours.

Evening Return:

By late afternoon, hit the road west toward Seattle or east toward Wenatchee. If you have time, stop at The Alps Candy along Highway 2 for old-school treats before heading home.

Tips for Your Trip

  • Permits: The Enchantments overnight permits are competitive and require advance planning. Day-hiking to Colchuck Lake or Lake Stuart doesn't require permits but does require a Northwest Forest Pass for parking.
  • Best Season: June through October offers the best conditions. July and August bring crowds, while September and October reward hikers with golden larches.
  • Weather: The east side of the Cascades is drier and sunnier than the west, but nights can get cold—pack warm layers even in summer.
  • Camp Setup: A Camp N Car build makes organizing your gear easy and keeps your sleeping area off the ground, perfect for quick overnight setups.

Leavenworth and the surrounding Icicle Creek Valley deliver a little bit of everything: alpine lakes, charming town vibes, and endless opportunities for adventure. This three-day itinerary balances big hikes with relaxing riverside evenings, making it the perfect PNW weekend escape.
