Camper Van Water Systems: Portable vs. Fixed Plumbing

A camper van water system can be as simple as two jugs and a hand pump or as integrated as a household-style sink, electric pump, water heater, and exterior shower. The right choice depends on trip length, climate, available space, payload, maintenance preferences, and the level of convenience you want at camp. Because water is heavy and leaks can damage a finished interior, van conversion plumbing should be designed early. Tank locations affect cabinetry, weight distribution, winter performance, and access to other systems. Comparing portable and fixed setups before the build begins leads to a cleaner, more useful layout.

Portable Water Systems

A portable system usually uses removable fresh- and gray-water containers stored beneath or near the sink. Water may flow through a manual foot pump, a hand pump, a rechargeable faucet, or a compact electric pump. The main advantage is simplicity. Containers can be removed for filling, cleaning, or protection during freezing weather. If a jug fails, replacing it is straightforward. Portable setups also take less permanent space.

This makes portable water attractive for weekend trips, smaller vans, and travelers who frequent developed campgrounds. 

Capacity is the main limitation. A five- or seven-gallon container may be manageable to carry, but frequent refilling becomes inconvenient on longer trips. Removable gray-water jugs can be a chore, and overflows are a pain to clean up. Portable components can also shift, rattle, or crowd the cabinet if restraints and access are not planned well.

Best for: minimal builds, short trips, freezing climates where easy removal matters, and travelers comfortable carrying containers.

Fixed Plumbing Systems

A fixed system typically includes a larger freshwater tank, an electric pump, a pressurized faucet, fill and drain lines, and a dedicated gray tank. It may also support a water heater, shower, filtration, or exterior wash station.

The primary benefit is convenience. Larger capacity reduces the need for refills, while a pressurized system makes washing dishes, cooking, and showering feel like home. 

The tradeoffs are weight, complexity, and maintenance. Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon, so a 20-gallon supply adds roughly 166 pounds before tanks, hardware, or gray water. Pumps use electricity; fittings and hoses add leak points; tanks and lines need cleaning and winterization.

Fixed plumbing consumes space. An interior tank offers better freeze protection but competes with storage. An underbody tank preserves space yet is exposed to road conditions and colder temperatures.

Best for: longer trips, full-time or frequent travel, hot water needs, showers, and buyers who prioritize capacity and everyday convenience over simplicity.

Freeze Risk and Four-Season Design

Freezing water can damage pumps, filters, fittings, and tanks. For year-round travel, keep vulnerable plumbing inside the heated envelope wherever possible. Avoid routing lines through exterior walls and unheated pockets. Tank heaters and heat tracing can help, but they use electricity and cannot replace a dedicated cold-weather design. Drain valves, low points, and a practical way to empty the system are essential.

Portable systems have an advantage here: containers can be removed or emptied quickly. Fixed systems can work well in winter, but they demand more planning.

Capacity, Weight, and Space

Start with realistic water use. Drinking and cooking require relatively little; dishwashing and showers, however, can multiply consumption quickly. Instead of choosing the largest tank that fits, estimate daily use and decide how often you are willing to refill.

Heavy water should be secured to the vehicle structure with weight distribution in mind. The full system must remain within the van’s payload rating after accounting for passengers, gear, batteries, cabinetry, and accessories.

Service access is also important. Pumps, drains, and connections must remain reachable. Shutoff valves and removable panels make ownership easier.

Choosing the Right Camper Van Water System

Choose a portable water system for simplicity, easy freeze protection, lower weight, and the flexibility of a compact interior. Choose fixed plumbing if longer autonomy, hot water, showers, or residential-style convenience justify the added space and upkeep. Many travelers benefit from a hybrid: a modest fixed tank for daily use plus removable drinking-water containers for flexibility and redundancy.
